New Lane Eases One of Dubai's Busiest Corridors
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed a two-kilometre widening of Sheikh Zayed Road near the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station, expanding the highway from six lanes to seven in the direction heading from Abu Dhabi towards the World Trade Centre Intersection. The project targets one of the busiest and most congested stretches of the emirate's main north-south artery, which carries heavy volumes of commuter and visitor traffic throughout the day.
RTA officials said the additional lane raises road capacity along the affected stretch by 17 percent, while cutting peak-hour journey times by as much as 10 percent. The authority said the upgrade forms part of a wider package of improvement works along Sheikh Zayed Road aimed at easing congestion as Dubai's population and traffic volumes continue to grow.
Wider Push to Modernise Dubai's Road Network
The Sheikh Zayed Road project is one of several traffic-management initiatives RTA has rolled out this year to keep pace with the emirate's expanding population and rising vehicle numbers. Officials have pointed to targeted lane additions and junction improvements, rather than wholesale road construction, as a faster and less disruptive way to relieve pressure at known bottlenecks.
The stretch near Dubai Mall Metro Station is among the most heavily trafficked in the city, given its proximity to Downtown Dubai, the Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa. RTA said it will continue monitoring traffic flow along the corridor and assess whether further capacity upgrades are needed at other points along Sheikh Zayed Road in the coming months.
